Stud
history
Constantia Dorpers
was registered in 1997. Extremely good genetic material and animals
were used to start this stud and breeding records were kept from the beginning.
(Right:)
Constantia 2137 (Lance)
This ram is
also used for genetic purposes and carries a lot of meat, is strong on his legs
and his strong point is the incredible breadth from the front to the back over
his rump and also his muscle tone. His offspring will prove to be
extremely promising.
Quality
Constantia
Dorpers does not only produce rams, emphasis is placed on the quality of lambs we
market. We often part take in slaughter lamb competitions to measure our
quality. This is the outcome of a recent slaughter lamb competition:
Constantia Dorpers won first as well as second place for the best slaughter lamb on the hook. The first lamb weighed 37,69 kg (live) and 20,80 kg (slaughtered) which results in a 55,30% slaughtered percentage. The total percentage given to it by SAMIC (South African Meat Industry Co) was 99,78%. The second lamb weighed 38,20 kg (live) and 20,50 kg (slaughtered) which results in a 52,30% slaughtered percentage. The percentage given to it by SAMIC was 99,70%.
These two lambs are currently two of the best achievers in South Africa. The slaughter lambs are offspring from our herd ewes and not the stud ewes. We only use the best rams on our herd ewes and it only proves what the offspring is capable of - absolute quality as you can see on the photo to the left. This only proves that you need excellent rams to breed excellent ewes and rams.
Selection and Breeding of Rams
(right)
Young rams in the veld. Some of them were sired by Lance (above).
Young rams are extensively bred in the veld and those that do not show the
excellent quality that we breed are culled. They are only rounded off at
sales for the food. When situations are dry they are given a lick
supplement according to their needs.
The selection
of animals is determined through breed standards and emphasis is placed
on the following:
*
very good length
*
very good meat quality
*
very good growth ability
*
masculinity in rams and femininity in ewes
*
a light coating which means a mixture of kemp and wool with a clean kemp
underline
*
the framework must be medium to large.
Animals with the above qualities are used in the stud. We frequently use new genetic material as well as our own bred animals as in the photo above.
In Conclusion
Constantia Dorpers frequently takes part in National and Club sales as well as in field ram projects and national slaughter lamb competitions. The results of these sales and slaughter lamb competitions are extremely good. The embryos available are from tested stud rams and ewes.
